Harry Potter Make-Up Team Discusses the Epilogue

In a new article from Entertainment Weekly the make-up team for the Harry Potter films discusses all the hard work that went into aging the actors for the Epilogue in "Deathly Hallows: Part 2":

Old age makeup is tricky. “Ninety percent of the time, it attracts attention to itself,” Dudman points out. So the process of creating the scene was intense, with the team looking at the actors’ parents and their characters’ onscreen parents for clues about the aging process. Initially, the plan called for lavish makeup. “We made the girls more hip-y, more bust-y, with a little more tummy. We made prosthetics for the guys so we could take their hairlines back fractionally. And we made a whole series of prosthetic pieces: Eye-pieces, nose-pieces, cheek pieces, chin pieces, ear-pieces.”
Lisa Tomblin, the chief hair designer who worked on four previous Potters, notes that — when they originally shot the scene, “Dan Radcliffe had a gray wig. Rupert had a receding wig with little bits of gray in it. Emma had a short wig. But it didn’t really work. It’s very difficult to age somebody that’s 20. It’s not like you’re aging someone that’s 30 and has the start of wrinkles.”
The rest of the article discusses how they were dissatisified with this initial attempt and what they did for the final version. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" has been nominated for a Best Makeup Oscar.

I was so happy that they re-shot the Epilogue, the way everyone looked originally looked awful! But they all ended up looking spot on perfect, any older looking would have taken away from the feeling of the last scene. Kudos to the make-up people, I hope they win tomorrow night! XD

That scene was my favorite! i’m surprised they didn’t put something about the make-up in Page To Screen.

I’ve a feeling that the re-shoot hadn’t happened by the time that Page to Screen went to press. There can be a turnaround of up to 6 months between the time when the author completes the text of a book and its appearance on the shelves.

If anything, I thought they made them look a little too old for 36/37. That really isn’t very old!

They did a great job! Although I thought Daniel’s hair was a little bit of an exaggeration. Anyway, it made me cry nonetheless to see how much they’ve grown — with or without the make-up, they’re no longer little 11 year olds anymore. By the way, I thought that Harry Potter should have won . . . gah, Potter is being snubbed left, right, front, and back!

They did a good job making Daniel(Harry) look like James. At first I was like,“Is that Daniel?” Lol,but I knew it was. They did a good job with everyone, but in my opinion, they made Draco look to old.
